Default Cape lodge opponents plan appeal

    Hi all,

be aware if you are thinking of investing in this development...

    The Dominion Post

Opponents of an American billionaire's plans to build a luxury lodge at Cape Kidnappers plan to lodge an appeal in the Environment Court before the end of next month.

After a 3-1/2-day hearing, Hastings District Council recently voted 4-3 in favour of granting a resource consent to Cape Kidnappers Station to build 24 chalets and lodge facilities at the cape.

The development includes plans to tunnel a room into a western cliff face to provide sunset views.

The station is owned by Julian Robertson, who will open an exclusive golf course at the cape next month.

The applicant had argued that the lodge, which is to be built on private land, was designed to blend in with the environment and not harm the world-famous gannet colony.

Twenty-one submissions opposed the development on the grounds that it would ruin one of Hawke's Bay's landmarks.

Rod Heaps, treasurer of the newly formed Cape Kidnappers Protection Society, said the group would lodge an appeal before January 22.

He estimated $40,000 would be needed. Fundraising would begin in the new year.

"We are taking on the Hastings District Council . . . and of course the applicant for capitalising on our iconic landscape," Mr Heaps said.

"It will be a David-and-Goliath struggle and we are doing it for Hawke's Bay."

The group comprised 15 core members who were "passionate" about saving the cape, he said.

It was hoped a lawyer who supported their cause might be able to offer services.

Mr Heaps said he was confident that the consent granted to Cape Kidnappers Station could be overturned on appeal.

The group will next meet next month.

    Best regards

    Marc
