I can't see why anyone would aim for mortgage free on their own house over other financial goals. If we are talking the financially free dream here I think that having ten or so income-producing rentals would be better than pouring all that money into your own home. Especially while you are young and unencumbered. Pre-kids my income was amazing. I'll likely never get back to that level or if I do it'll be eaten up with daycare fees.
But that's just me, once I've got to my financially free sweet spot I will only have rentals in NZ and maybe a small flat for the occasions we are in the country.
