HNZ tenants with dogs find HNZ's rules on dogs a joke, I've lived next door to HNZ tenants before and have owned a rental next door to one. Most of them have their dogs and to heck with anything HNZ says, they're a soft touch. Government gives them tidy solid houses for peanuts and they just piss all over the rules and don't look after them run off leaving arrears, mess, damage and everything else. HNZ is always going to a problem, they will always be soft touches to tenants who are (I'm sorry) 9 times out of 10 terrible tenants who can't find a house in the normal rental market so pray on the government to give them a house. WINZ pays out for families to live in 3 bedroom houses for $460.00 per week in Auckland, so why on earth does HNZ need to exist. You can generally spot HNZ properties a million miles away, they're the often not well kept properties in a neighbourhood. I just don't understand the need for HNZ anymore, look at how many times HNZ goes through the tenancy tribunal in a week. Their tenants get $5 taken out of their benefit weekly to pay off their damage and that's it, but it's ok the government forks out for the house to be renovated after their terrible tenants have finished trashing it. HNZ does my head in, it will always be a continuous cycle of bad tenants who don't abide by the rules who can't even afford to pay out their $100 a week for rent each. I do acknowledge there would be some good tenants out there but all I'm seeing is a string of bad tenants creating trouble and mistreating properties then off to the next property.

BigDreamer, high class areas? which area might you be referring to?
If these tenants have rented before, ask for a reference on their dog. In a high class area you're less likely to get the tenants with 3 pitbulls who all hang around inside and scare the neighbours, if it's the typical family dog I would take the risk. Good tenants can often have dogs, don't be afraid to ask if you can meet the dog (you may get to see where they're living currently and how they keep their property. If they don't seem to keen on the idea of you meeting the dog *red flag* *red flag*

The area I was referring to is Millwater in Auckland. It is a new built house that I am planning to tenant to a potential family with a German Shepherd. I will do what you have suggested and meet the family and the dog first.www.PropertyMinder.co.nz

follow up on the earlier story
I'm happy that he's all right," he said, adding that his boy's scars were now healing.
...
Shepherd now faces possible eviction for keeping a dog on the HNZ property without permission.
... he was still waiting on details from HNZ, but was despondent at the thought of being evicted.
... the incident had changed his own view on pitbull terriers which he believed should be banned. "I don't trust those dogs," he said.

this story has it all
hugely entitled;
world wildlife fund worker
lawyer, daughter of ex-labour mp + QC lawyer
has a dangerous dog on a leash as it tears off bits of someone's face
hides it from dog control
refuses to answer questions in court
gets some cell time for contempt of court ...
when will people learn
these dogs are suitable pets
like guns are suitable toys
Gretel Fairbrother appeared in dramatic fashion in the Porirua District Court yesterday, where she was briefly held in the cells after refusing to answer questions from a Porirua City Council lawyer.
Fairbrother, a former barrister who now works for the World Wildlife Fund, is the daughter of former Labour MP and lawyer Russell Fairbrother QC.
She has been charged with owning a dog that attacked a person, failing to keep a dog under control, and wilfully obstructing a dog control officer.

... he was out running when the dogs (a tan colour bullmastiff cross and Vixen, a rottweiler) came out from under a tree and attacked him, biting his arms and left hand.
He told the court Pritchard (21) tried to get the dogs away from him "but they would not respond".
"Eventually she got the dogs off me. I asked her to help me, to take me to the hospital because I was bleeding,
and she didn't help."
He went to hospital for his injures and also laid a complaint with the council.
.................
The dogs were taken to the pound after Naqshbandi laid a complaint,
but about four weeks later the pound was broken into and the dogs taken.
They were found in Pritchard's possession on May 16
.................
Pritchard was not at the hearing where Judge Arthur Tompkins convicted her on the six charges
- two each of being the owner of a dog which attacked a person,
failure to muzzle a menacing dog
and being in possession of a dog unlawfully uplifted from custody

The attack occurred while the Auckland Council was prosecuting Lambert in relation to two attacks on other dogs.
"He was convicted and the court made an order for the destruction of his dog," an Animal Management spokesperson says.
"Lambert appealed the conviction and order to the High Court. While the High Court appeal was being organised, Lambert's dog was involved in an incident with the neighbour."

An aggressive pitbull has been shot by police after attacking its owner.
Sergeant Shane Hurliman said the dog at the Simons St property was incredibly aggressive and it had also attacked two other two dogs at the house.
The two other dogs, a pitbull and a lab cross, had suffered wounds from fighting with each other and were impounded.
