  • Designing a new kitchen

Hi all, I am currently looking at designing my new 'U' shaped kitchen, any tips or advice for a novice? And any recommendations for places to go (in Wellington)? I have spent some time with a guy from Placemakers but want to keep options open (low-med cost budget).

    Cheers,
    J-Wellington

Hi; I had a Placemakers basic kitchen put in one of my two-bedders about 7 years ago. Someone from Placemakers did a computer-generated image of how it would look, seemed fancy at the time. Later I realised they didn't think about the positioning of the windows and placement of the fridge in the real place, compared to the template. So I ended up having to get a fridge with a right-opening door, as one of the windows encroaches onto the other side of the fridge. Another 'issue' is to do with the colour scheme. I went along with what they recommended, cream cupboards and laminate benchtop in sort of a mixed swirl of greys. Unfortunately over the years as properties in the area come on to the market, anyone with a kitchen update has those same colours and look! Can seem uncomfortably cheap after you see it so many times.

I find it worth the travel to visit Jette at Mitre 10 in Crofton Downs. She has planned several kitchens for me that have all worked well. Pricing is better than Placemakers, and they give Flybuys !

I'm sure what you mean is that your kitchen colour scheme is very trendy.....the height of fashion no less

And the proof of your good taste can be found in the number of copy cats

        Well done!

I built few kitchens, it doesn’t really matter what your preference is - Placemaker, Bunnings or Mega 10, measure up, put in the base units, colour scheme – basically the doors, draws etc and bench top. The bench top you can order completely (L or U-shape or what ever) add some shelves, and ready for assembling.
If you have got some problems, email and I show you how to do that.
          Good luck.

Make sure the open end of the "U" faces towards the other rooms.
