I was reading through the opening post and thought pretty much immediately you might get rejected by both. Sorry to hear it. I think the contents insurer is on pretty thin ice and I'd go through the complaints process with them.

Finally an update!
BNZ came back with the report from the assessor.
Damage to units is not covered by home policy, recommended contents cover on items. He provided me a report to give to AMI detailing this.
Presented to AMI and they finally agreed to pay. But they would pay the amount I paid for the units, not replacement value.
According to their policy it should be "replacement value", but I think they have finally succeeded in wasting my time so much that I have accepted it.
