Looking at the events folder I thought there might have been a specific Property Talk event - I might looking up the Auckland Property Investment Association early in the new year

I would have assumed the same thing, that people on the forum, or the forum itself, holds a gathering of some sort, occasionally.

APIA is well worth the subscription fee, the meetings are interesting and informative, and you get to meet some very knowledgeable people. And it helps that the fee is usually tax deductible (so long as you derive rental income in the same tax year).

But don't just sign up straight away; wait for one of their deals where they waive the joining fee (usually $95 or so). In the meantime, try to find a current member who can give you a Guest Pass, so you can try before you buy. All members get two Guest Passes when they first sign up.
