    "A mandate"

All politicians cry that they have a mandate because they got voted in without looking at the possibility that they were the lesser of two evils and have the seats of power for that reason.

    Precisely Keys, precisely.

And when Key ignores this referendum result it will be with that "mandate" call.
Conveniently and arrogantly ignoring the pre and post election public opposition; as well as to how different the case for their sale is now as opposed to that made 2 years ago.

I was joking above - the squinting and looking sideways kind of gave it away. Interesting link - some of the comments are great.

But it didnt .So through this continual ignorance of a consensus their is a steady erosion of respect for authority & the laws of the country to the detriment of all.
Sadly the govt is also creating & fostering apartheid with many of its TeReo Maori language immersion classes, wrongly thinking that this will create harmonious race relations .
Would you be one of those 'family values' sorts who believe it is your right to be able to hit children?

Aha caught you out already using your "propaganda speak" substituting the word "hit" for the more precise "smack". It was the emotive propaganda terms like these that played a part into getting the law passed. A couple of decades back, school corporal punishment was the norm and schools ran better with the extra precaution & preventitive measure of physical discipline. Now teachers get assaulted everyday and hundreds of disruptive pupils get expelled every year who cant find other schools willing to take them. These are the result of years of entrenched liberal crap. These are the next generation of kids of the future committing a life of crime.
Kids are taught everyones a winner ,there are no losers. All equal, all the same.Mediocrity in mass..In order to be a real winner, you need to have lost.
Ironically we're breeding a society of losers thanks to this .

We ignore referendums at our peril.

    What a ramble.

How about parents go to real family values classes, to learn some parenting skills rather than resort to hitting/smacking/however you like to describe violence against children.

I can see we're at opposite ends of the spectrum on this. Clearly you are against corporal punishment yet seem unable to realise that it was a proven method of limiting the outrageous behaviour of kids in schools today. There are times when it was effective as a method of discipline & also formed a part of the parenting skills you refer too.Parenting skills today are being replaced by humbug goody good warm fuzzies crap that is often ineffective for many kids.
There is never one shoe size that fits all..

Using the terminology "violence against children" instead of the word smacking once again shows you have succumbed into the propaganda that the woolly liberal class launched with great throughfare quite some years back.. And where has that got us today? A backwards position .Hundreds of suspensions, massive behaviour problems in the home. Medical drugs to treat it all, addictions to follow..If you for a moment take off the shackles of the woolly cloak you now are wearing and compare all the newly invented conditions such as ADD, ADHD, Bipolar etc that exist only today yet not yesterday you may slowly begin to realize the massive lie constantly perpetrated & broadcasted daily to all your senses by our latte quaffing media...

Of course its easier to dismiss it all as "ramble", just as its easier to daydream & stay in a comfort zone than face having to discontinue the illusion.
Blissfully unaware of the direction of a beckoning bottomless pit.

What was this thread about again? Ah yes the housing market..Oh my, how we have digressed..

If no corporal punishment and the current woolly methods encourage losers, then smacking and corporal punishment teaches them the opposite. That smacking others is ok. It works both ways.
