Interesting - if you look at the source its an image using a custom bit.ly link pointing to http://www.ollynewland.com/unavailable.jpg

Maybe the site is not down .co.nz - maybe the index.html or whatever home page has been replaced with that redirect.

Yeah, if he's a previous contractor, it wasn't "hacked", he's just accessed the files and edited them. I think he's either deleted or shifted the page files as none of the website links listed on google work.

Why don't you get someone in via SSH or FTP or your admin console like cpanel and take look? Or just ask your hosting provider to take a look. You should tell them anyway and get all the admin passwords reset.

I wonder what has led the contractor to do this?

We're all taking Olly's side here as a fellow property investor, but of course we don't know the nature of the dispute. The contractor might be a malicious, useless type or they might have done an excellent job and just been paid or something.

So we're not really in a position to judge either way.
          Squadly dinky do!

            I agree Davo
But it's not very smart for a freelance programmer to take down a client's site just to prove a point, even if the client hasn't paid.
Especially if the client has deep pockets...

I have been on the end of Olly's distemper once here. There is always another side to the story.

Assuming it wasn't outsourced offshore, a local freelance guy is going to be reasonably intelligent, you'd have to assume, and would understand the market is relatively small, plus Olly's access to media, contacts and other outlets he could use to vent his frustration would make such a move either monumentally stupid or he must have been really rather miffed to risk the fallout.

It must have been the contractors fault because Olly's never wrong.

Even when a court of law makes a ruling in favor of the other guy, Ollie's still right.

                  Just ask Olly.

Regardless - it always pays to have your hosting provider backup your website to NAS or something not accessible to workers/contractors only the account holder.

It's a perfect example of what happens when you run a company with little-to-no IT expertise on staff.

Or he/she could simply be in the right, and the powerful, well connected, big O just wasn't enough to stop them standing up for themselves? We, of course, do not know.

People in this forum know it is all about ownership.
You own a house, a business, a website – you have the key and change the lock if necessary.

Running a website, you own the source (location A), for content, development administration you hire someone, if approved that update gets uploaded from A to location B (public space, hosting service).
For both locations you the owner has the keys (for authentication user name & password). Why would you give away both keys (for A & B)?

You would give your contractor a separate key to do the job, if that fails you (the owner) is in control and makes a decision – or not?

Under all circumstances the source (A) and destination (B) the content should be identical and if B gets compromised - change the lock, restore it from the original source (A) and maintaining ownership.

Okay back to something a bit more basic.

Anyone know the best way to regularly get Olly's commentary and blog's.

Peter's email comes out now and then and in it has a link to what Olly has said.

But anyway to set it up, from the site, to email out to the masses, when something is posted.

Given the disparity between the perception and the reality with the big O, it may just be some very long delayed chickens coming home to roost!
