Same in Wellington.
Don't know what I think - would be sorry to see downtown businesses suffer.
But sometimes people need to be protected from themselves.
Also not nice to have unruly element out at night.
Not to mention all the cleaning up the next morning.

Similar disscussion in Tauranga.
When I was in Ireland they had a 1pm curfew in Kilkenny due to an incident that happened - a big fight or something.
The only it did was turf most clients out on the street at the same time (a few bars would have lock ins but you would have to exit out the back if the coppers came knocking) and then everyone would head back to houses in the housing estates to continue on there merry ways and p$% off the familys trying to sleep at that hour.

IMO, all the arguments about crowds of drunks on the streets, drinking in parks and lost business are rubbish. I came back to NZ from the UK in 1994 and in both countries, closing for bars was normally about midnight. I think the UK was actually earlier in some cases. We went out after work and by 8.30pm, the bars were really busy. We were toasted by midnight and ready to go home. 2am was a huge night. Now the bars are empty until 11pm, when groups of already drunk people come out to party. The bars lose out because they don't drink as much and don't stay as long. The reason people stay out so late now is because the opening hours were extended. If they reverted back to earlier closing, people would go out earlier. You can find me at: Energise Web Design

Not my experience in the 1 1/2 years I spend in Ireland in 07-09, and they still went out earlier.
ETA: Contrast this with Germany ( Nortn Rhine Westphalia area.) and the drinking in the bars I went to was a lot more civilised, children are allowed to drink with their parents, they have low/no alchol beer etc so not such a novelty when they reach drinking age.Last edited by Maccachic; 31-07-2013, 01:06 PM.

Can't see that happening though.
I read that France is having a binge booze culture problem now.
Ain't it a fact, no matter how hard we try to catch
up, the breweries and wineries seem to make more than
we can drink.Last edited by Maccachic; 01-08-2013, 10:27 AM.

how the downside of alcohol consumption is evident in
more and more NZers' lives. Moderation is becoming a
lost art, and people like yourself (and me) are becoming
an endangered species, almost as rare as the Dodo.
