  • Lengthy council consent process proving costly

Belgian Beer Cafe Torenhof owner Mark McGuinness says businesses will fail in the rebuild of Christchurch because of the red tape surrounding council consent requirements.

He is considering legal action for cost recovery for the lengthy period dealing with council requirements.

His business had lost hundreds of thousands of dollars in potential revenue because of the lengthy building consent phase that took almost 90 days rather than an expected 20 days, he said. "Dealing with council has been diabolical for the best part of four months."

    Déjà vu again.
Perhaps the capital gains tax will fix this too?

Only 4 months? Sheesh, pretty normal nowadays. Shocking hopeless, but normal nonetheless.
    Squadly dinky do!

And - of course - no realistic
      comeback on the perpetrators.

You think four months is lengthy?

            How about:

"WELLINGTON CITY COUNCIL is stumping up $1 million of ratepayer's money to help Wellington Airport make it through the resource consent phase for its proposed runway extension.
            . . . .

Mayor Celia Wade-Brown said the resource consent process was expected to cost $2 million
            ....
Depending on the planning and consent process, the extension could be finished by 2018."

So for $2 mil all you get is a pile of paper.
            Not one stone shifted.
Lots of newly wealthy Lawyers and Consultants though.

300m extra won't make it the world's easiest runway to land.

So one bureaucratic institution pays another bureaucratic institution which is part of the first bureaucratic institution, $2 million for permission to do something.

This is how civilisations end. They tie themselves up in never ending list of rules and regulations and spend all their time attending to those rather than getting anything done.

What on earth do they do for $2m??
That is some expensive paper shuffling.
Let me guess $1m per mangrove tree they need to cut down or is there some taniwha that needs koha?

Wellington Airport is a company 66.7% owned by Infratil. Bureaucracy (Wellington City Council) only owns a large minority stake. So WCC is paying Intratil $667000 effectively.
