    Default Painting OVER wallpaper

Howdy. Has anyone here had success with this during renovations?
1950's home has multi-layers of original/70's wallpaper [hideous as it sounds!] some of which is munted from where their evil cat scratched.

Have had a quote to plaster all the walls to grade 5 after I've steamed off all the paper, but had someone suggest that I paint OVER the wallpaper to save me hours of steaming [and swearing] and 2K on plastering.

Apparently I can apply some glue to make sure the paper is all adhering in non cat-scratched areas, and sand back where the cat's been. Then seal it all, and whammo! Walls are ready to paint.

    Any experiences with this mission?
    Cheers.

Has it bubbled, peeled or done anything that makes it look bad? Are the results grade 5 or rental grade?
    Thanks!

Same for me, all painted over, and no issues so far after two and half years.

As long as you patch the edges or where paper is peeling, it will be fine.

If you start painting and the wall paper is coming off, then you got to strip it and plaster.

No bubbles not sure if it was done professionally or not had it 6 years now and only need to patch the peeling corners.

Friends lived in a flat in Dunedin that had so much paint over the paper it was comming off but still remained upright.

Wallpaper adds another later of protection to your gib. Paint over it!

However should you ever want to strip the paper at a later date once painted, then it will be much more difficult.

Every diy person and home decorator I've ever asked has always said strip the wallpaper.

So I did that in a bathroom and repapered because the walls weren't flat enough for paint.

Even so, if it had been a bedroom...I'd have painted over the paper. It works.

How about for non-rentals - would you paint over the wallpaper in your own home?

We'd like to get a really good finish, grade 4-ish. Has anyone achieved that with paint over wallpaper?
