Workers may be flying high in an environment of buoyant employment, skills shortages and heady consumer confidence, but their wages and salaries appear firmly tethered to the ground, a survey has found.
The survey, by the Employers & Manufacturers Association, found basic wages and salaries increased by an average of 3.86 per cent this year, only a fraction above last year's 3.82 per cent average raise.
Employer expectations for next year are also at the same level as they were last year, with pay increases forecast to average 3.38 per cent in 2004.
"No one is expecting any large build up of wages pressure," the survey's manager, Graeme Perfect said.
