  • Was Flatbush an old landfill or asbestos dumping ground?

    Hi all,

I'm currently doing some reseach about the new flatbush area and some surrounding subdivisions near it.

Im looking to purchase a PPOR and wanted to find out some history on the flatbush area.
Over the years ive heard rumors that it used to be a landfill, and also heard that farmers in the area used to allow asbestos to be dumped in paddocks.

Ive tried manukau city council and all i got told is to pay for a lim report when i buy the house and it will tell you if there has been asbestos testing done. i dont have the funding to do that for every house i look at. Id much rather have a general overview of sections to avoid purchasing.

Where could i find out some history about closed landfills in the area?

Is there maps available that highlight where asbestos testing was done?

Does anyone on property talk know about the histroy of flatbush?

Are developers required to remove all traces of asbestos proior to getting resource consent granted?

Am i being a bit paronoid about asbestos?

any help on the subject would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Mech

I recall murmurs and newspaper articles pre-1999 about supposed asbestos dumping there. Found this report which looks worth reading -

RESIDENTS’ PERCEPTIONS TOWARDS ASBESTOS CONTAMINATION OF LAND
AND IT’S IMPACT ON RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY VALUES by SANDY BOND of University of Auckland and DAVID COOK of CB Richard Ellis, New Zealand

Wow thanks Wendy i read through the report, although it was mainly about the property prices associated with the perception, there was a lot of information about the history of flatbush and dumping of asbestos.

At the time of the report 2004 its mentioned that the manukau city council was unaware of what levels of risks are acceptable for living with.
Has there been any more information or announcements from mcc.

It says that all areas of flatbush will have a caveat slapped on the lim indicating that there may be asbestos present. has this changed or is it still the case?, i'll give the council another call and find out more information. I guess it will be another stigma attached to houses just like living next to a high voltage powerline.

Ahar i did do a google search for key words: closed landfill, flatbush, dumping etc but found limited information. but then i searched for asbestos and flatbush and found a few news paper articles.

Is there is anyone here that has recently purchased a property in the flatbush area that i could enlighten us with more info or PM myself?

I'm going to try to contact the manukau asbestos action group to get more info.

I suggest searching a property file first. If its noted on the LIM then there should be some info on the property file. Given the scale of development there it is unlikely to be a problem as dangerous contaminated material would have been exposed in foundation excavations by now. If you are concerned it might pay to talk to a contaminated site specialist. Tonkin & Taylor in Newmarket are probably the most reputable & largest specialist consultancy. Ask for Tony Cussins, he's a pretty good bloke.
