Hello everyone! I saw this website and it looked like a place where I can get some answers I think I got the right section so I'll begin:
I need urgent advice because I sense I'm getting in a lot of trouble here.
I should start by saying that I'm from overseas and I'm living in Auckland. I rent a room in a house whose tenants are a Kiwi couple. I was looking for a place to stay in for about four months, they seem pretty nice and I trusted that we would get along quite fine. No contract / lease was signed but I gave them two week's rent as bond.
Six weeks after I move in, on the 29/05, they give me the news that I should look for another place to live since they're moving to Australia and we all need to be out of the house by June 25th. This came out of nowhere since as I said before, we had talked about me staying for four months.
Last week (30/5) I told them I was going to look for places to move before the 15/06. I found a great place on 1/06 at a decent price and location so I agreed to move in by 6/06. In my current place I pay rent in advance so I already paid here until 10/06 and I do not mind. The problem is that the tenants are claiming that we should had given them two weeks notice before moving out and demand us to pay rent until 25/06.
Considering there's no contract / lease, just a verbal agreement and they had given us verbal notification that we needed to move out by the 25th isn't it right that if I find a better place during those weeks I should be able to move out without any concerns?
I think they might be looking to use my bond to pay their rent on the last two weeks instead of giving it back. And I really need that money.
Honestly, I think I am right on this issue but I need your advice since I do not know how you usually handle this situations in your country and this is stressing me out.
Please, I need your advice!
Thanks in advance.
