  • Good Tile Layer Wanted

Hi guys, I need a good tiler to lay some tiles in kitchens, bathrooms, entry ways, decks etc. out at my job in Papakura, Auckland.

Can anyone recommend good tilers? They would need to be able to start in the next couple of weeks.

I want someone who is good without being really expensive if you know what I mean??!!

Ive used Sam Lim (Total Tiles Specialist Ltd) on a few jobs. Good quality of work, better than other tiling companies I have used. Friends and colleagues have also been using him and pleased with service. He carries a crew of 5 - 10 tilers so should be able to fit your work in.

Thanks Propoholic, Sam will give us a quote hopefully.

And I've got one other guy off the BuildersCrack (some guy keeps posting links to this site on this forum, which I disliked but now I'm using them, so it worked) website, so he'll quote too.

Funny, I would also use Sam Lim - as he has done my fathers house a few years ago. We had to replace the grit between the tiles for a small section (after 12 months) but other than that - did a really good job

Well we've hired a guy from BuildersCrack.

He phoned up quickly, went and saw the job today and gave a quote which is very reasonable.

He's got good feedback on the site and I've seen photos of his work, so hopefully he'll work out well.

The guy from Sam's business did not show up.

          Thanks for the help everyone.

I was going to recommend a tiler but I see you have one. Next thing is to ensure your grout is sealed, preferably colour sealed for longevity and ease of cleaning when tiling is complete. A lot of Tilers do not do this and it doesn't take the grout too long to start discolouring because as you wash & clean, the dirty water sits in the channels and evaporates leaving residue which over time discolours the grout. Sealing is the only way to stop this and it makes it easy to clean, no scrubbing.
Hope I'm not breaking any rules here but we are grout & tile restoration and maintenance specialists. We are not Tilers. If your Tiler doesn't do sealing call 0508 GroutPro.

I'm starting to regret my choice of tiler already. he keeps messaging me through the Builders Crack website.

I have told him several times to deal with the development manager. His english is quite poor, so he doesn't seem to get it. I hope I haven't made a mistake...

ditto a tradesman i used from same site.

very hard to communicate if english is not the primary language. I had to deal thru the boss in the end to get job complete. Work was good quality but communication was difficult

This guy is causing me all sorts of headaches. He's done a really average job, demands payment straight away, thinks I'm not going to pay him (despite the fact that I have paid him 3/4 of the amount so far and he only finished today).

Just really really difficult to get on with, has had arguments with the development manager (who is now saying to me "Why did you employ this guy!") and basically just caused a lot of stress on my job. So much for builders crack. I won't be using them again.

Davo make sure you give accurate feedback ratings on builders crack to help save others issues later.

I am dubious about some ratings on the website my guy had. I would say use builderscrack but only if they have lots of feedback and high ratings

                      Davo

Sorry to hear of your experience. I echo Whitts recommendation - please leave accurate feedback on Builderscrack to help others.

Please also PM me with the details of the person you chose, and your job number and I will follow up.

                      Regards

                        Ok Keith I will.

This guy has a lot of favourable reviews as well. Not sure how others could have such a fantastic time with this guy. Keith can anyone sign up and then do a positive review? i.e. could they be false?

You can award ratings in 2 stages. I wonder if people are reluctant to post the first group of ratings truthfully.
I must say I hesitated rating my guy too bad at first stage, job was not complete yet so my rating may influence tradesman.

                          Davo
I suspect this maybe why your guys had favourable ratings.

I wonder if we should be able to edit first rating review at end of project. or if the rating could be hidden until project completion. With a note during filling out that the rating will be hidden untill completion of job and something about accuracy to help others in future etc...

BC has potential but I only know of 2 people who have used BC. Myself and DAvo and both of us have found slightly inflated review ratings on tradesman.

                            Hi Davo / Whitt

No one can list a review a tradesmans workmanship with having used them for work. This is one of the big advantages of Builderscrack.co.nz over alternative rating sites.

You are right that there are two review steps. The first rates communications, and can be completed before the work is completed, or if you decide not to go ahead with the job. The reason for this rating is to incentivise tradespeople to communicate in a timely and professional manner even if it is clear they won't win the job. These can be completed after the job is complete if you feel more comfortable doing so. As work has not been done at this stage, we have a number of checks in place to ensure these reviews are geniune.

The second stage reviews the workmanship, and can only be completed by those who have used the tradesperson.

Reviews are a very good predictor of tradesperson performance. However, even good performers occassionally slip up (this is usually only if they get busy and use new sub-contractors, so it is good to check who will actually be doing the work).

We encourage accurate feedback to be left for tradespeople, as the negative reviews are as useful (or often more useful) than the positive feedback in helping people select the tradesperson for them.

It is important to choose the tradesperson that reflects what you are looking for. Many customers are very happy to work with a tradesperson who may not have english as a first langauge, but offers a competitive price. Others want to pay more for a New Zealand trained tradesman. The advantage of Builderscrack.co.nz is that is allows you to make a choice.

We have had over 4,000 people post jobs on Builderscrack.co.nz, and more than 95% say they will use the site again (over 65% have already used us more than once) - the feedback suggests the vast majority of experiences are very positive. However, that doesnt mean I am not unhappy when it doesnt go well, so please also let me know the details of the job in question,

                            Best regards

                            Keith

Keith, I'll post on builders crack once we've finished with this tiler guy. Went out there today, he's cocked another big part of the job up. He's chosen aluminium edges which are too high for the tiles. So now there is a lip and the development manager is saying the council may see it as a tripping hazzard. So we have to get them to inspect it.

But he has glowing reviews on your site. I don't get it.
