Would be interested to hear from anyone with experience doing their own building consent applications.
We are renovating a villa in Dunedin, new heating system, new windows, extra bathroom etc. Local designer wanted $600 to draw plans (reasonable) and then $3000 plus the council fees to put in the building consent for us. I thought the $3000 was a bit excessive so I got a second quote. The second guy looked at the designers name on the plans and quoted me $7000! (I suspect he knows them and did not want to step on their toes).
I was also put off when the designer wanted to put every last change on the plans - even stuff the council does not want to know about. Even the new windows - which the council later told me need no consent.
So we want to have a go at putting in our own building consent application. The council seem helpful so far, I have telephoned with questions a couple of times. So if there are any average Joes out there, who definitely DON'T have encyclopaedic knowledge of the building code but have successfully sorted their own building consent it would be great to hear any advice.
