Streamlining ahead for building industry
Saturday, 13, Feb, 2010 5:26PM It is hoped streamlining of the new licensing system for builders will weed cowboys out of the industry.
Building and Construction Minister Maurice Williamson has revealed a system he says will make it faster, easier and cheaper for qualified builders and tradespeople to get licensed.
The Registered Master Builders Federation says people will have more confidence in builders once they are licensed. Chief Executive Warwick Quinn says it will also lift standards in the industry.
"What it will do is it will stop the cowboys, if you like, entering the market, because at the moment there's no restriction on who can be a builder. And there's no requirement for them to be qualified in any way."
Mr Quinn says licensing will make it more difficult for unqualified people to pick up a hammer one day, and become a builder the next.
More costs to building. Irrational behavoir all over again.
Up goes the price of new houses. Just as well we have no intention of building many this year. No tradies left. A lot of the older ones will just retire rather than subject themselves to this garbage.
