We originally opted for voluntary gst registration to claim gst back on asset purchases and company set -up expenses at the outset. The treshhold for voluntray registration was $15- $20k or so less than it is now.
Capital costs up-front weren't large-but significantly in excess of income at the time (10 yrs back) to get a gst rebate for a new PC, printer, scanner, new workstation, filing cabinets, bookshelves etc at the time of set -up.
However- in our particular situation- my husband has also been in and out of IT contract work over the years and we have used the same registered company as we registered the nature of business a "Project & Property Managment" for invoicing his services as well. This tied in well as I have charged "project management " consultanacy fees for overseeing renovations for property owners in the past as well :-)
