  • Carterton for the future

    Hi Guys

Article on stuff the other day about Carterton.

Carterton takes first steps towards 'inland port'
    17 November 2003

Carterton is taking the first steps towards a Wairarapa "inland port" with the proposed re-zoning of land to attract industry at Waingawa, just south of Masterton.

Carterton District Council chief executive Kieran Shaw said the council was talking with Go Wairarapa about "significant" commercial interests related to the development.

"There are various parties interested and we are working with Go Wairarapa and a number of people to plan the change to make a larger industrial area that would cater for expansion," he said.

The council has formulated a plan to extend the industrial zone at Waingawa on the western side of State Highway 2 so it could accommodate more industry.

It could possibly include a "port" that would be a centre for the rail export of Wairarapa produce and logging.

"It would be a significant expansion mainly to meet the tide of timber coming on in the next five or seven years," Mr Shaw said.

The proposed re-zoning would require a notifiable change to the district plan, which would cost up to $60,000.

The council is now waiting for a commitment from the commercial sector to determine whether spending the money was worthwhile.

Mr Shaw did not want to comment yet on the scope of the re-zoning, but said it amounted to a "significant enlargement".

He hoped Tranz Rail owner Toll Holdings would support the project.

There are no fixed dates for the project and Mr Shaw said it would progress in 2004.

"Discussion progress is being made with corporate entities and as soon as there is a clear plan we will be launching into it".

It was not planned to extend the zone to the eastern side of SH 2, and a buffer zone would surround the possible industrial park.

He said the proposal would be discussed with other councils as part of the formulation of a Wairarapa-wide regional plan.
