Britain, like the USA, is stumbling incoherently towards self-destruction.
While the clever boys and girls at The Economist may think that the great British public is capable of entering into a reasoned debate about policies and costs, the reality is different.
Remember, 86% of the population has an IQ under 115, which means the vast majority of people lack the intellectual capacity to understand the issues. Furthermore, most of those with an IQ above the threshold level aren't particularly motivated to learn about the issues of importance.
So in the end perhaps one percent of the population has both the cognitive skills and the background information necessary to enter into serious thought about policies, costs, and implications.
Which means, in short, that the UK will continue to lurch incoherently towards greater and greater self-harm.
This is the fundamental problem of representative democracy: the assumption that thoughtless ignorant voters should be permitted to vote for incompetent self-aggrandizing "representatives."
It's a guaranteed recipe for disaster.
The only difference between today and yesteryear is that today everything is amplified:
modern communications coupled to global supply chains means
(a) greater complexity, and
(b) larger knock-on effects.
So bad policies lead to much worse outcomes than even half a century ago.
We're going to see a great deal more unrest in the coming years, and it will lead to all manner of horrors.
Because people, in general, aren't very bright and their "leaders" are no more so.

Well, that's the main problem of democracy: ". . . the fundamental problem of representative democracy: the presumption that thoughtless ignorant voters should be permitted to vote for incompetent self-aggrandizing "representatives."
The better alternative is what, exactly?

Representative democracy: you have an vote once every 3 years and call that democracy. Yeah right.

for those with an interest in the immigration debate
readers rip into the economist
over an unusually lightweight story about sweden assimilation struggles
Not much information here. Let me make an analogy that the Left refuses to acknowledge.
If I were to ask any American leftist if they wanted to have more KKK members imported to their state/city/neighborhood they would obviously and passionately say, "No way!".
For Europeans, perhaps old guard Nazi types would elicit the same response. I could say the same things about gangs and others.
When you boil it down the reason is because of not only what they believe but their willingness to act on those beliefs.
I am quite sure not all KKK members believed in lynching or engaged in it. I am sure most were not overtly violent.
I confidently posit to you that Middle Eastern and N. African societies are among the worst societies on earth precisely because of what they believe and practice.
They have precisely zero pluralistic societies, no tolerant societies (by Western standards), no concrete civil rights and nothing outside of Islamic governing principles which are essentially monarchies and dictatorships.
In fact, their god, Allah is widely believed to command expansion and subjugation of all non-Allah types.
They settle all things everywhere by force. There countries bear the fruits of their own beliefs as they engage in nonstop, 24/7, 365 days per year warfare and violence, exporting it any chance they get.
I suggest that you judge them fairly as any other group. If any other group held the same beliefs in Europe they would likely be outlawed as a political entity....

No, ISIS and terrorists do not represent the majority of Muslim people who abhor the attacks. But despite making a few friendships among the locals, I will not be returning to live in another Arab country. My blog. From personal experience.
