I think it's probably a generation thing too. I didn't grow up with a mobile phone so txting in the company of others seems rude and antisocial to me.

I do have friends that have adopted this activity - maybe the whole txting thing is to show the person/people you are with that you are 'popular' or 'important'? To me - it shows an immaturity, and lack of social skills.

100% agree Donna, cell phones are something that should be used in private by consenting adults.

They are great things for convenience in some circumstances, although let's face it, sending a message letter by letter is somewhat akin to morse code in its lack of technical sophistication.

People are rude regarding cell phone use, but having said that, even with land lines, people feel obigated to answer a ringing phone, even in the middle of a conversation or a family dinner. The difference is I guess, that people take the wretched things with them wherever they go, so they are exposing themselves to the whim of anyone wishing to call them.

Important people make calls, not take calls.

But be sure to turn it to silent. You dont want the ringing to ruin the mood.

I knew I had grown up when I could ignore my ringing mobile and not feel the need to clear the message for an hour without having heart palpitations!

Are you suggesting turning it onto "vibrate"?

                    Cell phone "eat-iquette," perhaps?

People are programmed to answer a phone when it rings, and most will be unable to continue a conversation with their phone ringing in the background.

I have tried to break myself of this habit, but find myself turning the phone off, as it is too difficult to ignore. I always swore & declared I would never have a mobile, now I have 2, work & personal!

On the other hand, we get so used to being able to contact people, that when Mum didn't answer the phone for 4 hours the other evening, Dad called me, I called my Aunty & the neighbour & a search party was sent. She was enjoying the fact the phone had been left upstairs & was having some peace!

I have my phone on me most of the time, but always on vibrate only .

That way i'm the only one that knows it's ringing, doesn't intrude on anyone else that i'm talking to at the time, and the person calling can leave a message (that's what the answer service is for, and i'll call them back in my own time when i'm ready). Easy!

It always amazes me with these people that have their mobile set to the highest blimen' sound they can find, and have to feel that it's of the utmost importance that they have to answer it ASAP, and talk into the thing at the LOUDEST voice they can!....Jeez!...

Thats probably because you'd actually find that we think very similar,......(like similar robots do),...... but because we are communicating via this weird contraption called the,.....INTER-WEB (you have to sound that out with a weird type voice),....then our thoughts are opposites!

i.e., .....best we talk about it over a beer one arvo! PM me if ya want! ( even monkeyboy might be in for a sly guinness or two!)
