I'll add my voice of dissent from the "magic immigrant" theory... Makes no sense at all.

Net immigration seems to be the rallying cry in Australia. Even for renters, going by the media reports, the lack of housing would be enough to actually kill immigration. The Pollyannas like us to believe that the bulk of immigrants are well-heeled, highly skilled migrants with half a million dollars to spare on a house in burbs. Oh, and the Gold Coast is being swamped nouveau riche Russians looking for a slice of paradise. The mind boggles.
