Hi All,
I was doing some research for a speech on the closer ties between Aus and NZ and came across this post:
Umm I then noticed the user was 'banned' I wonder if it was because he suggested the merger? It was an Australian website and they would have a lot less to gain from a merger with us.
I do wonder if it would be a good idea to move towards a European Union arrangement - it would benefit both countries, sharing of resources and the ability to go after bigger contracts? It may also encourage more business here in NZ and of course with that more opportunity for the next generations.
Of course we would not want to lose our sporting focus and I'm sure that could be protected - after all isn't that the only thing stopping us from wanting closer ties with Aus?
Our GDP is approx 1/8th of Aussie's GDP. I must admit I am struggling to find a real benefit to Australia in all this - other than the inclusion of other nations in time - maybe FIJI, and other Pacific Islands.
I wonder what would happen to the property market too?
Cheers,
Donna

What do people think of a Australia-New Zealand merger into one country?
Would it be a wise choice, economically? politically? culturally? socially?
COUNTRY
Australasia
REGIONS
Australia
New Zealand
STATES/TERRITORIES
Western Australia
Northern Territory
South Australia
Queensland
New South Wales
Victoria
Capital Territory - cant be A.C.T cos its not 'all Australian'
Tasmania
North Island
South Island
We'd have 24/25 million people....
Cheaper flights to and from N.Z/Australia.....
Bigger Army (by about 5-7,000)
Stronger stock market? wouldnt our dollar to U.S cents go up?
Increased trade, more business oppurtunities
greater diversity of native flora and faunas
extra tourism dollars
