    Diana Clement: The 3-hour millionaire

"Monopoly on steroids" is how financial board games are billed. What better than a fun game over the summer holidays that builds investing prowess.

Games such as Cashflow 101, from Robert Kiyosaki, author of the Rich Dad, Poor Dad series, and New Zealand's own Hybrid Property Game aim to simulate real life investing scenarios and offer a safe environment to play with numbers and focus on goals, while experiencing the opportunities and pressures of different phases of the investment cycle.

New and experienced investors alike benefit from a long night of playing the property or sharemarket around a table. Groups of investors sometimes get together for afternoons or evenings of playing these games through the website PropertyTalk.com and also the Hybrid Group.

Roger and Susan Raymond, president and secretary of the Northland Property Investors Association, play Cashflow or Hybrid whenever they lose motivation. "Every time you play them something different happens and you have to revise the way you think about investing," says Susan Raymond.

Investor, seminar presenter and property investing author Ron Hoy Fong admits that he's gone bankrupt on paper several times while playing the Hybrid Property Game, which is designed to teach investors about the property cycle.

Specialist mortgage broker Mike England, who runs PropertyTalk's Christchurch events, rates investment games as educational and motivational.

May have to kick off 2008 with a game or two? I know Mike and Scott are planning a games event in Christchurch early Feb 08. Wellington and Auckland normally get good numbers for these events too.

    Cheers,

    Donna

Please someone organise a session in Auckland between the 16th and 30th of March, in particular I would love to play the Hybrid game...

Perhaps get the master himself, Kieran Trass, to organize an evening.

Well if he does and I enjoy the game (and my luggage allowance permits) he will have made a sale...

Isn't grown-up's playing board games a bit juvenile? I last did that sort of thing when I was a student. I tell a lie, I just remember taking part in one of those sessions a few years ago with the then fairly new Kyosaki game. I think the session just fizzled out. I thought at the time it was all a bit chummy and immature and I can't remember if I stayed till the end. I had better stop there in case some of the attendees are reading this.

Xris - if you don't have something constructive to say, please say nothing at all!

How about a few suggestions about how to make such an event more interesting?

Set up a company to adapt the game for NZ. Then produce the NZ version, market it and make money. If need be ask RM to come on board with you; I understand they have ways of overcoming copyright rules.

Alternatively, all have a brainstorming session to come up with a NZ varient that is different enough from the original so as not to incur the wrath of Mr Kyosaki's copyright lawyers.

There's a couple to get going with.

Geesh Xris - I almost feel sorry for you! I have many happy memories playing various board games with family and friends over the years - Monopoly, Scrabble, Pictionary, Trival Pursuits.... all good wholesome fun while spending time with the people that matter! And the Hybrid game is just another fun way of spending time with PT friends.

Try stepping away from the monitor occassionally and have some fun meeting people face to face!

Yet another good mention of PT, Donna!

Xris, the Hybrid game is a game designed by Kieran Trass for the NZ market... So it is precisely what you are talking about.

On the board games are childish front... I agree depending on the board game. Pure luck games are childish, and while they can be fun briefly aren't that great. However there are plenty of board games which are definitely pitched at adults. Ignoring Kyosaki's game (which I think is a good intro for newbies, as long as you tone down some of the attitudes it encourages towards risk) there is also the euro/german games genre, which has plenty of fantastic games in it. And there are quite a few that are useful for teaching certain financial concepts. But then I am a bit of a euro games fanatic.

                  Cheers

                    The game of the Gods?

The game of the Gods is poker.

I am a master poker player. Or am I bluffing, and actually terrible? Who can tell...

Poker is the best game for testing your finance abilities - it has application to real world strategies and negotiations, and also has a sizeable element of probability theory and statistics.

Ok, point taken from BL and others. A pointless comment by me about boardgames.

As a rebuke to the accusation that I spend all my time in front of the mornitor, nerd style, there is a little more to it than that. Already this moring I have spent a couple of hours on property matters: a detailed client letter; printing docs; rent record checks; a text to a hung over 19 year old to try to arrange access for viewing this afternoon. And still to come is inspecting broken floorboards; possibly then arranging a carpenter to lift carpet and replace, over the new year break; more paperwork; a possible open home inspection if the 19 YO leaving tenant can bother texting back his OK on the proposed time - and then texting the applicant in either case; typing out two rent increase notices and one inspection notice - and posting them; dropping off paint and brushes to a tenant; more bookkeeping. And all this while still finding the time to make 'silly' posts on PT.com.

I agree with Glenn's comment in another thread that having a good system in place is utterly critical.

I have been doing lots of sleeping in my rocker chair recently.

I love the board game called "Risk". Invented by the french its a game of world domination with each player having their own armies.
Fantastic fun, especially the propaganda to stop people attacking you or getting them to attack others. We've had them go on for days and nights.

Settlers of Catan and its derivatives are our favourites at the moment - strategy, luck and good negotiation skills are a must. Highly recommended.

(and its about building settlements and cities too, so it is property related!)

Risk is great, Risk 2210 is even better, though hard to get your hands on.

Ah, Settlers has come up... Excellent, its a great game. Cube, if you get the chance try Puerto Rico, its a fantastic economic game with real depth, and has been the best game on BoardgameGeek for 3 years now.

I'm still convinced that the original Civilisation board game is best, if you have 12 hours spare and 7 people to play it with. Really gets at the essence of trading and negotiation

But then you might say I have too many games: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/viewcol...tartletter=ALL
