I have a real problem with somebody who says adding a tax on something will make it more affordable. Has it worked anywhere ever?

A CGT is levied in a lot of places with expensive housing and hasn't stopped the housing being expensive.

The adherents of a CGT are unbelievable stupid if they think that imposing one in NZ will produce drastically different results to other places it has been imposed. A bit like the loony commies who suggest communism is the best form of government, and when the abject failures are pointed out. Reply with it just hasn't been done properly yet. Blinded by ideology and can't see the obvious flaws that anybody with the smallest ability at critical thinking can pick up on almost instantly.

Read the article while it didn't mention statistics on demographics I suggest it's women who have outlived their spouses and not ready for the retirement village. Plus I'd be surprised if young people could afford to live alone - they're staying at home later and as such maybe when they do finally leave the nest, if they're not partnered up, then it's the one bed apartment? As mentioned in the article older people are not comfortable getting in younger flatmates.

The article also mentions the lack of community so meeting people is harder for older folk and people not keen on Tinder etc.

I wonder if there has been any match ups here on PropertyTalk?

No insulation in an airBNB would mean it can't be rented.

No code of compliance on that kitchenette put in to allow you to airBNB as an 'entire place' listing means it can't be rented.


These government driven barriers to entry for potential land lords may now bite them in the a@@

I was wondering about the numbers of returning locals and the impact on housing and rentals especially. Mr Peters said there are some 80,000 travelling, and there are hundreds of thousands in Australia who, if they lose their jobs might have to head back here. To family and possibly welfare if they don't qualify there.

Meanwhile visa holders here will probably be allowed to have them renewed as they pretty much can't leave.

Its one thing to 'conjure up' 30,000 houses but its quite another to find somewhere to put them.

The reality is that you cannot just walk into a large grassy field and proclaim "Let there be houses".

Think protests from lawyers, iwi, greenies and then think water, power, sewage, stormwater and roads.

Unfortunately, though, that leads to uncomfortable questions

1) Were the socio-commies promoting the idea ignorant of those impediments?

2) Were the socio-commies promoting the idea fully conversant with the impossibility of their pre-election promise?

I.e. Thoroughly well-informed, voter-duping self-interest or abysmal ignorance?

Neither prospect is in any way reassuring.
