I used to work with a woman who spent a couple of years on Wairoa - and that was enough apparently.
We spent a night there just after New Years, blissfully unaware that there had been problems a few nights earlier. The guy at the Napier Info Centre said "It's ok now because there's alot more police up there" but we didn't see 1. Stayed at a good motel by the bridge and had takeaways in the park by the river. Very pleasant.
The drive from Napier to Wairoa was a pig and the road from Wairoa to Rotorua (via Lake Waikaremoana) is mostly unsealed. Atleast the trains still run from Napier to Wairoa.
