Well it is all about the tourism. Basically they are plowing the profits they are presently making from oil (a non-renewable resource) into generating tourism. My favourite thing there was Wild Wadi Water park which was a water park with water slides that had jets that actually pushed you to the top before you went down them. Perfect in that kind of heat.

It is a crazy place, I've stopped over there for a few days, great fun though I couldn't spend more than a couple of days at that heat...
