There Must Be A Word For It
Something that almost everyone knows is a lie, almost everyone pretends is not and everyone sort-of looks at the floor or the other way. Everyone seems to just go along with it - at least in public - despite knowing it's a crock of crap.
A good example is the current NZ tax-payer-funded donor-media mouthpieces for the gummint, all the while the media concerned and the gummint pretend it's not so. Oh no. The media are independent. Yeah, right.
Don't bite the hand that feeds you.
But it's not just about regurgitating gummint lies, spin and BS as if it was true. Or saying nothing when a certain gummint lie should be exposed and yelled about from the rooftops. In many cases, it's shovelling out media releases as if what's then published just might be the result of some reporter's (factual, well-informed) efforts. Here's a great example of a 're-cycled' media release.
Under the banners of - Business - Opinion Analysis is this . . . (Don't look for any analysis by STUFFed, because there isn't any.)
Let’s not confuse retirement village living with home ownership

It's not until one gets to the end of the article that the bias is manifestly exposed for all to see: "John Collyns is executive director of the Retirement Villages Association of New Zealand."
Nowhere to be seen is anything like, "sponsored content." (I.e. Advertising by another name.)
But the bias is revealed earlier on, for those who have eyes to see.
"Many of our residents . . . "

Who's kidding who? And why?
