if the usa can't sort it's fiscal cliff within the week

taxes go up and state and federal workers go unpaid in the new year

it could trigger a depression in the usa, and then the rest of us...

the mayans may only have been out by 10 days, not bad over 3000? years

The USA has a choice on what it wants to do.
I can't see them choosing a depression so I'm picking they'll choose the alternative.

there were something like 580 deaths by firearm accidental discharge this year in the usa

including the man who shot his son in the head while attaching his seldom used rifle to the gun rack in his truck after unsuccessfully trying to sell it at a gun shop

the NRA's response to the latest school shooting?

        armed guards in all schools

that would probably push the accidentally shot death toll up to around 700? a year

to add to the 30,000? intentional gun deaths....

so i'm no so confident they will make the smart choice

I agree that the gun issue reveals the dumb rednecks have a strong say in that matter.
But I figure the dumb rednecks don't have any interest in the economic decisions that need to be made and so some sanity will prevail.
Well, maybe I'm always the optimist.

I do smile when I see the USA who pride themselves on being the 'best goddam country in the world', smart enough to put a man on the moon, the mightiest military power (look at what those drones can do), the best computer geeks around and yet struggle to come up with a solution to the problem of mass shootings in their home-towns and schools.
'Get more people armed' seems to be the solution.

I wonder if the NRA could explain their reasoning behind such a claim.
I mean, did they examine the option of removing the gun from the bad man?
Or restricting guns to only allow small hand guns?

I heard the other day that half the guns in existence are in the states.

So removing them might just be impossible. Or take many years at least.

And that is if they had the will to do it, which they don't.

Seems they were wise enough to make the right choice in the end.

they decided they didn't really, really, really need to make this deadline

so they appear to have simply pushed some of the harder stuff down the track a little

                            such trickery

                            doesn't impress the far sighted

Yeah I basically look at anything the Economist puts out and do the opposite. They are wrong about everything, nearly all the time IMHO.
