BRISBANE motorists are paying the equal-highest capital-city fuel price as some service stations sold at more than 7 cents a litre above the average.
In the City, pump prices reached 137.9¢ a litre yesterday afternoon, equal with Sydney as the highest unleaded petrol price of any capital city.
But motoring groups have warned that some retailers might be setting their own prices, with the average cost of unleaded petrol closer to 130¢ a litre across Brisbane.
Peak-motoring body RACQ yesterday said prices had been steadily increasing in the past two months but motorists needed to be careful where they shopped.
"You have to be a little bit wary about it because it just takes one operator who can charge what they like," spokesman Gary Fites said.
Motorists should hold out for better prices during the lower part of the weekly cycle, with prices expected to fall to 120¢- 125¢ next Wednesday.
Price-savvy motorists yesterday could fill for 118.9¢ at service stations at Zillmere, Kippa-Ring, Wynnum, Galloways Hill, Rocklea and Birkdale.
The cost of unleaded has risen by more than 30¢ a litre this year.
Many retailers were accused of price gouging after the State Government scrapped the 8.3¢ a litre fuel subsidy.
Premier Anna Bligh said yesterday the higher prices were not linked to scrapping of the fuel subsidy.
"We do know that not long after the fuel subsidy changes Brisbane in fact had lower prices than in Sydney," she said.
"But across the state we will always see some up and down and we will have the benefits of the down and none of us is going to like it when it goes up.
"This is being compared to other states that have the same arrangements."
Mr Fites warned motorists that fuel prices could go even higher as the world's economic situation improved.
