  • Looking to relocate to the UK

Hi everyone, I'm a New Zealander with a British passport and I'm looking to relocate to England. New Zealand's cost of living/crime/property prices have finally got to me and I no longer want to live here. Could UK members in this forum give me any advice on where to move to? I'm not that keen to live in London, and given my line of work, it's not necessary to be near a city. I'm looking for something coastal. Any advice welcome!

I can jump in and so I have family in the Peak District and Scotland. Apart from the weather they love it.

Agree - the big cities are a melting pot. I heard on RNZ today - someone in London is selling off a stairwell for around £30K - believes it can be a liveable space. This is the madness of big cities crammed to the hilt.

    cheers,

    Donna

Thanks Donna. It's been a bit disheartening looking at properties in the UK. Prices in my top locations are through the roof. It looks like we'll only be able to afford a flat (and even flats are expensive). There must be some lesser-known locations that are more affordable. I think I'd rather pay a little more so my family are happy. It's easy to get it wrong when you don't live there! I'll keep researching. Would just love to hear from someone who knows!

I have always found it's best to rent when first arriving - and then doing some local research. I've never stayed long-term in the area I first lived in - this in itself speaks volumes.

For example, looking a bit further out and taking in local open homes is enlightening. Bristol is lovely but you can just cross the Severn Bridge and get a much better deal - Caerphilly is an hour from Bristol.

British people don't mind the travel between work and home. We do. An hour is nothing to them - to us it's a long time.

        cheers,

        Donna

I come from Sussex and the coastline is long and varied. Brighton is an amazing place to live so well worth a looksee. Further east from there is cheaper but not as nice in my opinion. Good luck.

Try Eastbourne, Newhaven(between Eastbourne and Brighton), Seaford, or Denton if you don’t need to be right on the coast. Hubby’s family live around there.
