    Renting to refugees

Unsure if it’s a good idea or not renting to refugees through Red Cross and WINZ. Anyone has already experienced with this kind of refugees family and would like to share the experiences please? Thanks

The below link is from a couple of years ago.

WINZ clients. Not permitted by law to discriminate on various aspects. The Privacy Commission has provided details as below. If applicant needs WINZ support (bond, redirection of rent) landlord needs to be set up as a supplier. Tenants can stop rent payments from WINZ and landlord will not be given a reason.

Some cultural issues. Some like to cook over gas cooker so might use bbq in garage instead of using stove in kitchen.
Devout Muslim might do call to prayer extremely late at night and keep kids up very late so can be noisy if next door. My daughters neighbours did this and dragged furniture around each night to make space we think and played loud call to prayer unfortunately in room over her bedroom.
Some don’t traditionally use furniture but sit on mat on floor, not an issue unless your place is furnished.
Some foods are quite pungent and can cause a lingering odour that is hard to remove. I think it may be mustard oil that makes the smell?

If they rent through a government or other agency they should help them assimilate and sort out issues. If you are dealing directly with them it would be helpful to identify which religion they are if any so you don’t unintentionally offend them somehow.

Embarked on this on being approached when advertising a rental with the idea that I would like to help so arrange an inspection by local agency then someone rings me up trying to negotiate a less than market rent down without having any idea at all if my proposed rent was reasonable. At this stage I suggested that they learn the business a little before they negotiate and that my rentals were no longer available and let the place out to one of the other 20 applicants.

^^ with high immigration there can't be any relinquishing of the emergency motels aye - that’s a headache the coalition will want to sort out asap.

A hangover from Labour that will be around for sometime and then maybe everyone will forget it was Labour’s F up and blame the current Govt.
