I have lived in Auckland and Wellington ever since moving here in 1991. Due to my work, i travel to Hamilton quite a bit and i have to say the quiet life style really appeals to me. The fact that housing is cheaper there is a real plus however the lack of cafes and restaurants is my only complaint. I like my chinese food and it needs to have a good variety.

If you think it's bad now (and it isn't too bad really) you should have been here 20 years ago when we moved. It was a real eye opener - 1 or 2 decent restaurants in the whole town.

They had a brain-storming session some years ago to try and come up with reasons why people should visit and/or holiday in Hamilton.

The only reasons they could think up were that it was close to the attractions of Raglan, Rotorua, Cambridge, etc.

"Holiday in Hamilton, then its only a short distance to somewhere else!"

Can't argue with that can we? Its also closer to Matamata if a visit to Hobbiton is in order. I was very impressed that the city centre had a JB Hifi store.

Well I like the sea, beaches, sand, hence I would love to be able to spend my winter months in the Gold Coast =)
Ahh the Gold Coast - a stylish destination for men of real taste!

Talking of small towns Kapiti is underrated...50 km north of Wellington has similar temperatures to AKL a lot of the year but lots more sun.....KMs of clean sandy beach, and a bird sanctuary island also good hill walking. Makes great craft beer, wine, cheese, ice cream, olives, olive oil, artisan bread, (we'll be fine if we're cut off from Wgn in an earthquake) and while Wellington will get 45 out of 60 days strong wind Kapiti will get just 2 and now we can go direct to AKL 3 return flights a day and the flights are under $100 each way....drive time is just 35 mins to Wellington non peak.

I love AKL too NZ needs a little big city.

                cheers,

                Donna
