  • The Golden mile

When you take out the bottom of the market and landlords exit , it's the bottom of society who gets affected the most.

Loss of Tax deductibility on mortgages, increased compliance costs and general anti landlord sentiment caused by media and the current government was the most likely cause that this end of the rental market barely exists.

Current ideology dictates that everyone should live in a brand new $900,000 new build, or something similar.

That's not how the world works.

It's true capitalism is far from perfect, but it's a far better alternative to socialism.

That single mum with 5 children is unlikely to be able to afford housing provided by private landlords without any financial assistance.

There is a huge shortage of social / public housing and there is a rising number on the waiting list for social / public housing.

There will always be a number of vulnerable households who need social / public housing. As housing becomes less affordable in both the house ownership market and the house rental market provided by landlords, there is an increase in the number of households requiring social / public housing.

I believe winz tops up the shortfall, and no doubt many of them would would require financial assistance.

I'm sure there are landlords that would be happy to deal with this end of the market if regulations tax or otherwise didn't hinder or stop them.

This believe that the government left or right should be able to house the bottom end of society is wishful thinking, The cost to build these houses and have the tax payers maintain them permanently, rates, repairs, insurance as well as feed and clothe the tenant/s is doable, but other sectors would suffer as a result, health, education, the pension, infrastructure etc take your pick to cut back.

We don't have an unlimited amount of money, yes the RBNZ can print it, but this would diminish our purchasing power, see Venezuela's socialist policies and it's ruined economy for an example.

Capitalism encourages the private sector to take over, relieving the burden on the state and tax payers.

Unfortunately, by the looks of the Golden mile, we would rather see this than actually see people become wealthy of property.

Who is better to manage rental property? The state or the landlords. Id say the landlords, the state are spending over a $1000 per week just on a small family to live in these run down, over crowded units, the motel owners are rubbing there hands together. Private landlords want to keep costs down and know only to well you can only raise rents to what the market will accept. A $1000 a week on a shit box unit is wastefull and the tax slave is paying for this waste.

According to Megan Woods, some overweight Maori guy, with his gang connections as his property managers.

            From one news this morning:

Hooton told Breakfast that vulnerable people are being "dumped" into communities with no contacts and being cooped up in tiny hotel rooms.

"It isn't what people are promised, it isn't what people need, and it's destroying the Auckland CBD as well."

The former National staffer said the Government was "entirely responsible" for the crisis after funnelling billions of dollars to motel owners to provide emergency housing.

The solo mum with 5 kids probably gets quite a lot with working for families.

the hotel rate probably includes power? Does it include other services usually provided by hotels like cleaning, linen, furniture etc?

That story in Sunday left me wondering what the other side of the story was. Did he kick her out for no reason? Why would he change the locks on her? Sometimes people aren’t entirely truthful. I wonder what the truth is. It seems the government knows the story and has investigated and thinks there is no crime here.

the government paying the hotels was also to mask the disaster to the whole industry of lockdowns and border closures. They would have been bankrupted if they didn’t pay them to house homeless. Unfortunately there is now no where for tourists to stay except maybe air b&b unless they kick them all out again.

and I wonder why the Dsd couldn’t just unplug freezer and defrost it himself like any home owner or private tenant would do. Not a story.

At high school, there were quite a few stories of females who spoke openly that their future career choice was - as it was known then, "the DPB" (aka the domestic purposes benefit).

Needless to say, that it was not a high socio-economic area.

It's going to take years to clean up this mess, and with each Government term just three years - it's probably not enough for National to turn it around.

Labour has been a disaster - no excuses. Just like Boris, Jacinda should go down as our worst PM ever.

Someone told me once that house fires are very rare, on average if you owned a property since the year 0, it would have burned down once.
This rule of thumb obviously doesn’t apply to MSD mile where setting fire to your hotel room is quite common.
