  • Change of use not required - garage to sleepout

Tried to do a change of use, council looked at me like I was an idiot. Apparently a garage is ALREADY the same "use" as a sleepout

    Hi Crashy,

That is confusing as it has 'habitable' and 'non-habitable' under the same use - BUT it says the 'primary' use of the garage is for storing tools and vehicles etc - (i.e. a non-habitable space).

Only they have not specifically said it is a non-habitable space.

Building consent is needed to turn a non-habitable space into a habitable one according to NZCB.

Just a thought does it mean you can 'sometimes' use the garage for habitable use as long as it is not it's primary use?

    cheers,

    Donna
