  • Honest reviews: Ventilation systems; which is best Dvs, Sayr or Hrv

I have looked at the other threads on here and they are either really old or from people that are simply out to criticize ventilation. (No sales people need to comment please)

We are looking at getting a system for our own house and for our rental. I am convinced that that we need something - and 'no' opening windows doesn't work for either of the properties trust me, I tried it and it made very little, if any difference. We lost our previous tenants in June (Despite supplying them a dehumidifier and panel heaters) and it took us longer than expected to re-rent it. (and don't want to repeat it)

We have done some research and narrowed it down to dvs, sayr and hrv. What I want to know is what experience have people had with the 3 systems, customer service, and maintenance? i.e. The things you only find out once you have handed over your cash.

    Cheers Mac

Just curious: why did you exclude SmartVent? I prefer this brand for two main reasons:
    1) they are essentially Manrose/Simx, manufacturer of the most reliable fans;
    2) systems and individual parts are readily available from a number of resellers, so if I want to install myself or as a cash job via friendly handyman, I can always purchase the system reasonably cheap without paying extra margin to sales people, etc.

      Smartvent are my choice also.
Same reason really - purchase wholesale and install myself.
Some of the others have a flasher controller but do you really need the 'features'?

Locally produced in NZ that cost less than conventional systems.

I researched it - and saw the video .

            1. Both Sayr and dvs are NZ made / NZ companies.
            2. Unovent has limited control / automation
            3. I have pink batts and insulfuff - their filters are washable thin material. Think you need a F6-7 to exclude those fibre's. Therefore I didn't want my son who asthma breathing dust and glass fibre's.
            4. Once you buy a whole system plus have it installed the cost is not really any different from the top of the line systems.
            5. airfow nowhere near the others.

Similar money for less performance, less control and poorer filtering???

No I haven't but if I were to install ventilation system, Unovent is my first choice.

For a rental I think it should be adequate.

They'll have to add this to the WOF because of people like you.
Is something unhealty OK in a rental but you wouldn't use it at home?

I'm ok with WOF for rentals, increased rent is always nice =)

It was in my top four...my only issue was they have their new tablet version is not cheap...and I read several comments from customers that they have issues with it (Their facebook)

And a mate of mine had one and said it was a bit noisy.

I think the advantage of going to a dedicated supplier is, if something goes wrong you know who to go and see...your not dealing with an electrician, who with the supplier, who deals with the manufacturer. One point of contact and one would hope an expert.

My old Dad used to say "Boy, you'll never be disappointed owning something of quality" and so far it hasn't really put me wrong.

You don't have to buy that one.
I have installed one in a home I lived in.
I have installed 2 in rentals and the next 2 builds will have them also.
When I had one at home I never noticed a noise - maybe the motor was installed hard to a truss - they are supposed to hang.

Just make sure whatever you get the filter is close to the ceiling opening to replace it - pain in the A climbing around in the roof space every 2 years.

I think Wayne was more referring to crap getting past the filter and having your tenants breath it...I like - buy once and buy right. Ok you MIGHT pay a bit more for something awesome, rather than paying a little less for something that might be adequate.

Most good companies now warranty for 5-6 yrs which is good. That's my one turn off with hrv only 3yrs...that and their pushy salesman.

Yeah from what I heard on Chinese forums, HRV is too aggressive with their sales calls.

Yes I was - if I wouldn't have it then I wouldn't expect my tenant to either.
Doesn't mean they get the best but it is never 'OK since it's for a tenant'!
