I'm at that point where I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry. After two recommendations from two entirely different people, we went with a painting/decorating crowd who we thought would do a good job but turns out they are going to put me in an early grave.
We have had our entire house stopped/skimmed to a level 5 finish. A run down of where we are at:
- after house was completely skimmed, painters applied pigmented sealer via spray gun to all walls and ceilings. When I went to check that first day, there was so much primer on the ceiling in some areas that it was literally dripping off onto the floor. They assured me that it would dry and not to worry because they were going to give it a light sand
- after this there was to be 2 top coats applied and I specifically asked for this to be rolled (using Resene Black White low sheen on walls and flat on ceiling - but this was done AFTER they did a coat of low sheen on ceiling first)
- end result after they 'finished' the job = dried drip blobs on scotia, drips on walls, build up of heavy paint along top edge of
skirting, clumps of dust in paint, patchy ceiling with roller marks, different textured finishes between rooms, areas where they hadn't tidied up sanding some areas from the gibstoppers.
I got them back and pointed out all the things I wasn't happy with. Meanwhile I had already lined up my carpet installation, electrician to fit switches/sockets and wall lights- they returned today to begin remedial work and I checked after they had
left today and I think the problems are now worse! Issues now:
- they used a paintbrush to go around all my wall light fittings, switches, sockets and along bottom of wall above skirting and it's hideously obvious (previously they were working on a blank canvas as no lights had been fitted etc)
- they still didn't sand over some areas properly and so when you look down wall you can still see areas that gibstoppers did not entirely pick up with the light
- they have re-rolled some walls but I'm convinced that other walls still have spray finish as the texture is so hugely different- coverage still appears patchy, as if there is much thicker paint in some areas than others
We are desperate to move in - we have a new baby arriving in 4 weeks. We've already paid these cowboys some money. They are due to come back tomorrow and complete the job but I'm just not convinced they are up to it. Do I let them continue to stuff it up more or fire them and refuse to pay any more money and have someone else come in and fix? How can we even achieve an acceptable finish now given there is so much wrong and now I have carpet, kitchen etc in? Not to mention we had to move our furniture in as we had to leave our last place (and currently living with the in-laws until painting fixed)!!!!
I'd love to hear from anyone with some advice on how to move forward, where I legally stand and if all of these problems are able to be fixed!
