    Disposal of old paint.....?

    Disposal of old paint.....

Taking a hard line on paint disposal
What do you do with leftover paint? It is no longer acceptable to pour it down the drain or into the garden. More often than not, we store those half-empty tins in the garage thinking they may come in handy one day.
But the problem has remained - until now. Dulux has just released a new product that can be used to harden water-based paint into a disposable block.
Dulux's Envirosolutions waste paint hardener can be poured into the tin of paint, stirred then left for a couple of hours to solidify. It can then be wrapped in newspaper and disposed of like normal waste.

Read a brochure at Resenes yesterday about an additive you can put into any water base paint to stop fly stops on your ceiling.

It’s amazing what these people come up with.

I heard you just leave it in the sun with the lid off for a few days and it will harden up (never tried it though).

If you live anywhere near Waitakere City you can dispose of it safely at the Concourse disposal centre. I think they recycle it, being the clean green city they are :-)

You can take anything dodgy there - old batteries, paint, scrap metal etc...
two ears and just one mouth.. for good reason.

I think I would dispose of paint that colour also.

The majority of the big paint retailers (Resene, Gutherie Bowron etc) all seem to offer a paint disposal service, most of these paints are then re-mixed and recycled out to charities etc, so this would be a far more constructive use of your left over paint rather than just chucking it away!!

On the other hand, I have a friendly painter who has 3 lock-ups full of left-over paint, recently I have painted TWO of my rentals by grabbing enough left-overs from him to make up enough of an acceptable colour to paint with. Last job, full exterior re-paint (40 litres) of paint cost me $200!!! WHich coincidentally added $20k to the value of the property - now that's what I call a return on investment!!

So if you have left-over paints then send them to me, cos I got an old school to paint next!!!

There is also a fellow at the Sunday morning Takapuna market who sells tins of recycled paint.
Presumably he buys it from someone.

Great more landfill. What a stupid idea.

They recycle oil and paint at the Christchurch refuse station.

Why is it stupid? There is no shortage of landfill space in NZ beyond that caused by arbitrary council policies.

Acrylic paint is pretty harmless so a solid block of it wouldn't cause any environmental problems if buried.

                      paint mistints

The guy at Takapuna market is named Barney.
Its Mistints ,mostly from Resene and Dulux.
If your not to partuiculer about exact color ,it is great.
Tell him you heard from Steve the painter, and you may get a slightly better price if you buy enough.
I do alot of spraying and have several Landlord friends who have gotten me to do roofs, and fences, etc. pretty economically this way.[one of them got paint from the henderson tip which was mentioned earlier] Didnt seem to mind a pink roof since paint was free. He waterblasted and I sprayed it for him. Barney would get you alot closer to the color you wanted prob for about $60-70 a bucket of good Quality paint like weathershield. Good Luck
Im on 0272942408 if your interested in spraying[Its amazing what some charchol paint can do to a roof or old fence]
