I learnt Maori songs in primary school.
I learnt to count in Maori in primary school.
I learnt to draw Maori patterns in primary school.
The school was mostly white European kids, but it was also very multicultural.
The staff were all races.
Apart from these few skills in the Maori language, the rest of the language is wall of meaningless sounds and letters.
Exactly the same as if I am looking at Russian or Chinese letters.
Pretty, but meaningless .
So when I see a news article about a GOVT DEPT with a MAORI name, I have no idea what the article is about. I am locked out.
When I see a public building with A long Maori name across the front, I have no idea what it does.
I don't go in or even remember it.
Clearly it's not for me.
It's mental work I'm too busy to waste time on.
I have things to do.
And the Government who provides the buildings and reports and ideas?
Clearly they are not a facilitating me.
How can I vote for a bunch of people who are excluding me?
Same as the interesting looking Chinese eateries in Albany.
The ones with only Chinese signage out front.
How can i go in? Its clearly not for me.
How would I even know what to order from the menu.
Do want all the mucking around, or just an easy relaxing lunch.
Even a small English translation under every sign and document ( by law) would help.
I suspect there is a bit of hubris and craziness taken over the upper sections of our society.
And a hell of a lot of pandering to keep ones job.
And I'm mild in my disapproval on this direction. Many people I know are furious at this nonsense
Really jumping hot furious.
What do they say...
pride before a fall.
Oh well.
