Older people forced to sleep in car as housing crisis bites

    Social Security Act
Labour won the 1935 election arguing that every New Zealander had a right to a reasonable standard of living. The community was responsible for ensuring that people were not overwhelmed by circumstances against which they could not protect themselves. Labour’s ultimate response to the Depression was the Social Security Act.

The Act [was a] comprehensive array of welfare benefits. It was financed by a tax surcharge of one shilling in the pound, or 5%. Supporters envisaged a scheme that would protect New Zealanders ‘from the cradle to the grave.’
a tax surcharge of one shilling in the pound, or 5% = five cents in the dollar.

No matter what, if that article is correct (dubious) then social security is not working.

I thought people sleeping in cars ended after the election. Or was that just someone no longer having to push an agenda?

We could always try something new - personal responsibility. Or is that too far fetched?

Sleeping in cars is super convenient... the commute to work is short, no rates to pay. With the amount people cook these days kitchens are overrated.

      Don’t see the issue.
