  • The closest trope I can think to use here is the hippie who actually does it and takes it through to it's logical conclusion.

One of the communes, opps I mean "intentional communities", I have stayed at practiced what is basically communism. Truth be told it wasn't my cup of tea but I enjoyed my time there. It worked for them and although they distributed the income equally, they had something to distribute.

Whatever lifestyle one chooses for this lifetime needs certain ingredients to function.

Unfortunately I don't see anything compelling on the NZ Inc "income" side of this government ledger. I see a lot of expenses and a lot of tax. This has a history of ending badly.

      Very true.

Your comment seems like an expansion of Thatcher's comment:

The problem with socialism is that one eventually runs out of other people's money to spend.

What none of us can understand is why the tax-and-spend crowd can't see that.

Or why and just how they think they can do the same, but different, and so make it work.

Don't you know Comrade Perry - there's a magical money pot called "the rich" who will pay for it.

Not everyone has to be right or left.
It's the perennial problem of labels and the associated stereotyping.

Mind you, as all LLs are victims of stereotyping, we should know that.

Like the rest of us, Michael is a mix - one that does not have a label.

Based on what we've seen on these forums, Michael works for wages, runs a business, does/did voluntary philanthropic work in the Philippines, has an eco-bent (his interest in off-grid systems) and goodness knows what else. I defy anyone to come up with an existing, common-vernacular lable to fit.

As Wayne implies, taking people at face value is best.

          • Feel free to call me a capitalist pig. I'm sure you will be at least half right.

I didn't much like National, but I am s***ing about the current mob. Seems they are hell bent on trashing us rural folk. Rural industry in this area goes towards paying New Zealand Inc's bills.

Right now, I make no secret of the fact I have my sights set on other parts of the world. Maybe I should take suggestions in this group which countries I should consider. On paper, Switzerland looks like a good option, but I believe it's pretty tough to get in.

I'm almost feeling sorry for you property folk. All that real estate makes you an easy target.

              On paper, Switzerland looks good . . . .
I don't know how tough the entry criteria is, but Canada has a lot to commend it, when compared to others.

Don't know about getting in but there was a series of articles in the paper that talked about how hard it is to FIT in.
                Culturally quite different to us.
People felt less free - need to fit in with the local norms.

This may be what makes it good. Every drop kick in the world who wants free education and healthcare can't just turn up and go on the dole.

That is part of my thoughts about Switzerland.

I am not in a position to act right now but I am certainly paying attention to what is going on and hedging my bets accordingly.

I haven't been to many countries but I have been to Toronto twice. It's a really nice city.

We bang on about what a beautiful country NZ is, but I've been to Algonquin Park which is north of Toronto, is huge, beautiful and contains 2400 lakes! It's about 2.85% of the size of NZ - one park.

But they do suffer from the same artificially created house price BS we have here.

                        • The nightmarish scenario I see is an elitist government bringing in all sorts of dumb laws (which won't affect them) combined with falling revenue and increasing handouts to the sectors of the populace who are well connected, or too lazy / dumb to pay their way in life. And that includes the blue-voting over-65's who are just as much beneficiaries as those they look down on.

Landlords, along with fossil fuels and farmers, have been setup as the villians.

Unfortunately for landlords and farmers, they both have real estate which makes them an easy target. Miners rely on patronage from the government.

As I have been saying for years here, landlordary is not a good business.

For the "powers that be" - which choice is easier for them? Having a revolution (which often ends with getting their heads chopped off or in the case of New Zealand loosing the next election) or hanging some "evil landlords" out to dry?

                          Still need proof...?

                          • When you have Labour signing up to the TPP(A) or whatever it's called now, they show their true colours.

I.e. once in power, all those brave principles-in-opposition are crushed by the steam-roller of larger MP pay packets and comrade-taxpayer-funded perks.

Probably no real principles, either, when I think about it.
