i dont see how it can be a good thing to let this massive company into NZ, there are builders going broke in ChCh now, if they are allowed to flood the city with asian workers it will stuff our building industry, the only upside i see is they may bring building materials in breaking Fletchers strangle hold on the city, Once the chinese monster has what it wants it will spit Arrow out

Chinese investment will rise - Key
Prime Minister John Key says increased Chinese investment in New Zealand is "inevitable" but he has told China's new president he will only welcome spending that benefits New Zealanders.

oh yes....I could see how consumers getting better value for money would be a bad thing .
God forbid ...the old boy network ...get shaken up a bit and have to up their game and compete.
Sarcasm off now
I get totally frustrated with Trades persons in NZ. Too many times they break commitments or start a job and then bugger off half way through leaving the job unfinished for days or weeks.
I have lived in Asia 20 yrs and speak fluent Chinese. I would hire a Chinese tradesmen any day if he had experience in the NZ market and I had seen he can do quality work. For the simple reason that generally the work ethic is so much higher in Asia and you also get better value for money.
I know I will get torched by jimo and others for saying so...but if you lived and worked alongside Asians for 20 years like I have, then you would know that I am speaking the truth.

The obvious solution to your mental misalignment is to go live in China and stay there, enjoying all the associated overcrowding, pollution and slave wages. We here prefer a more civilized way of life. The occasional delay, while basic human rights are catered to, is a price we’re most happy to pay.
Shakes head in dismay.

McDuck and jimO,
Let's not get too caught up, focusing on the Chinese. Let's expand the debate a little..
Can you answer these questions
- NZ used to have car assembly factories. Why did these close down? Why are Holden and Ford also closing factories in Australia?
- NZ used to make lots of shoes in factories throughout NZ. Why happened to those factories?
- NZ has some great clothing brands such as Kathmandu but not many of their products are made in NZ anymore. Why is that?
- Why doesn't NZ have any large high-end wristwatch companies?
Could it be that labour and trade have become much more global and countries and labour forces within those countries must adapt and do what they do best. Do things and produce things that they have a competitive advantage over another country.
So getting back to the original topic...why will the NZ trades such as building and plumbing be any different eventually? Can you foresee a day when the NZ government opens up immigration to select skilled immigrants such as building tradesmen.
Will NZ tradesmen complain....oh hell yeah, because it will shake up the industry....but the winner will be the NZ economy and consumer as we will get a more cost effective, timely finished product due to the increased competition.
I know it's an uncomfortable subject if you are a NZ tradesman.

The building industry is no different from any other industry in that respect. If you buy a Nike product, some of the profits will go back to USA. If you buy a Rolex watch then some of the profits will eventually go back to Switzerland. But NZers make a cut along the way in that purchase. the NZ distrobutor for the product makes their cut, the NZ government make their cut in the form of GST etc etc.

Same story .. If quality is comparable folk will only support the lowest price.
Many people in the American south in the 1800s did not like slavery but became addicted to the lifestyle based on a cotton economy that could only be achieved with cheap labour. It took a war to force that change.Last edited by Shalodge; 18-07-2013, 10:54 AM.

"It's completely wrong that a Kiwi fisherman should need to learn Russian to fish in Kiwi waters."
A company is advertising for Russian-speaking crew for a New Zealand based trawler, and Labour doesn't think much of its chances.
Fisheries spokesman David Cunliffe spotted the advert in the Nelson Mail, posted by human resource consultants Intepeople.
Officers, engineers, cooks and deck crew are needed for a Ukraine trawler based at Nelson which will be fishing for squid and hoki in New Zealand waters.
"A working knowledge of the Russian language is important for safety reasons and for reading mechanical and operational instructions," the advert says.
"To apply you must be a New Zealand citizen or have a residence-class visa."
Mr Cunliffe doesn't think many Kiwis speak Russian at the level needed to understand engineering instructions.
"This is madness," he said.

We just need to have a rule that all immigrant builders/trades people must charge at the same rate as their Kiwi counter parts.
Then cost of new housing would increase on average of $100k per typical 4 bedroom 2 bathroom 2 level brand new house.
That will cause house prices to increase even more.
I welcome this idea, it's great!
