  • Bernard Hickey - Our economy is similar to an old motor mower.

You can tell a man has a thinking mind and a passion for finance, when even the simple act of cutting the lawn reveals how money works.

    Article here.

Bernard Hickey doubts economies will recover properly unless they undertake a significant 'rebuild'; going back to the way we were before the GFC just invites another meltdown. Do you agree?

That means a redistribution of income and wealth back to those who consume
most of their income, a restructuring of debts that cannot be repaid with current
growth rates, and a re-regulation of a financial sector that leveraged up the
developed world and created dangerously large institutions with the capacity
to blow up financial markets again.
Aha! "Redistribution." A euphemism for more socialism. Is Hickey showing his
true colours, now that he's sold his Auckland house?

He's as clueless at starting a lawn mower as he is at understanding the housing market.

Yep, my mower is a similar age and the only time it doesn't start first time is when I've forgotten to change the throttle.

Ready to throw the economy out as well as his lawnmower motor? It's is just movement of wealth to countries who spend less than they earn.

How do those countries manage to spend less than they earn?
What countries are you thinking of?

Primarily I'm thinking of China. I think they do it by poor working conditions for poor pay for a large percentage of the population. And not caring about what happens to their environment.

The bigger question is what is wrong with BH's lawnmower? What has he done to it over such a short space of time? If he can't manage a lawnmower why does he think we should paid any attention to his comments on the economy?

If he hasn't used it for a few months, the fuel has probably gone off.

The air is usually sucked in past an expanded foam filter.
The filter is to stop small bits of grass contaminating the fuel.
That filter gets saturated in old oil. That in turn stops the air from passing into the carb.
The right air/fuel mix in the carb is needed for the explosion.
The foam filter can be removed and rinsed in petrol to dissolve the old oil. Gloves should be worn. Petrol can get into your pores.
This has a good chance of improving the starting of the mower. Other general maintenance, like cleaning the plug etc, will also improve our small petrol economy.
The foam mower filter ( Like our New Zealand border and import and financial filters) works best when it lets in things that aid the smooth running and efficiency of the system, and keeps out the unproductive elements.

Thanks for the good advice, Mc Duck! I was about to take my ol' mower down to the local shop. But will give this a go instead!

If only it was this easy to get the economy going! But certainly this invites us to look at how and why we are doing things. Take the time to get information, share ideas and treat it with respect, rather than tugging on the start cord, cursing it and kicking it around till it starts!

This is also a good youtube vid on mowers.

Its the beginning of the grass cutting season and the lawn mover wont start. After It starts then dies. It runs for only a few seconds. Here's a few helpful ...

Thanks for this, never thought I would be learning about lawn mowers on Property Talk! But being a property manger and investor it helps to know how to keep one going.

Hey, get the hang of a lawnmower and then you could move on to the economy.

Worth noting that oil accumulating on the air filter is a two stroke problem rather than 4 stroke. Two stokes mix oil with the fuel. When the piston compresses the air / fuel mix, some will blow back into the intake port / carb and accumulate on the filter. Four stokes should just get a bit of dust / dirt in the filter.

Yes, thanks - good article. More should talk about the banking system, money printing, bond crises and what the level of debt means.
