  • Paua Palace ironic.

Does anyone else find it ironic that New Zealand, first settled in order to stop it from becoming a hive of gambling and prostitution, now has at the heart of it's main city, a Casino spire higher than any church steeple and a brothel to go across the way.
    What have we become?

A bunch of rooting gamblers? Is that the answer you wanted?

Every city worth visiting has it's vice areas.

I dont believe the Skytower itself is actually used for gambling.
It serves many other obvious dining/viewing/jumpingoff types of uses.
At the moment is it lit pink for Breast Cancer awareness.

I don't think it's particularly ironic. I'm pretty sure the early (mostly male) whalers, sealers, gum-diggers, miners & land-breakers didn't lead wholesome puritanical lives.

It's not called the oldest profession for nothing.

?????? Really..... which history book is that in? Wasn't the Bay of Islands renowned for its public and bawdy houses in the early part of the 19th century
The mission of any business enterprise should include the aim to develop economic conditions rather than simply react to them.

Taranaki in the mid 1800's was the equivalent of the wild west. Bars and brothels everywhere. Even good old Napier at one stage at that time had 32 pubs within two city blocks and was renowned as having the worst rate of VD in the world.

Gov Hobson will be turining in his grave.
I guess we need to change the name of the Casino/Brothel street from Hobson st to "Hell hole of the Pacific" st.
Hobson was the man who was tasked with cleaning up the place.

Ps, yes, the main city was first up north, but then later shifted to Auckland.

                Ironic I tells ya.

Ha true, must be because human nature is at the center of it.
Reason and sense sitting on a deep unsightly layer of all the seven deadly sins.

It's unwise for these types of activities to get so big headed that they think they can openly prance about in the main streets.
Asking for one hell of a backlash if you ask me.
                    Give em enough rope....

They will probably be able to accommodate that request for you; but it will likely cost extra.

                          Hey McDuck
                          How did you manage this?

An inner city Auckland building destined to be a brothel has been cordoned off after large cracks were found in the walls, and parts of the building may have to be pulled down. A police cordon is in place around the Palace Hotel, formally known as Aurora Tavern, on the intersection of Victoria St and Federal St after large, fresh cracks were discovered.

He was stress-testing the business model with a vigorous trial run. A test drive, if you like.

Today the whole building is demolished, just a sorry pile of red bricks and broken timber.

As much as I hate lowlife trades creeping into our city, I also greatly enjoy classical Victorian craftsmanship.
I am rather ANGRY that this fine building has gone.
After the Chch quake I'm seriously concearned about preserving the sense of longevity in our cities.

I'm not sure if the whole Palace hotel demolition was a jackup, to get the land free for a soul-less cheap box, or the result of the developer going cheap and cutting corners.
                              I'm angry about it.

I watched the (equally old) Birdcage Hotel shifted without a problem.
Yet these guys stuff this small task up?

I would like to see prosicutions and heavy fines result, well I would actually like to see the site confiscated by the city - to send out a strong message.

Anyway. I'm asking around about who did what on this one.
