Hamilton rent dodger convicted of benefit fraud

By AARON LEAMAN - Waikato Times Last updated 12:10 12/05/2009
A serial Hamilton rent dodger has admitted benefit fraud totalling $66,000.
Kristen McIver, 26, unemployed, also known as Kristen Cullen, yesterday pleaded guilty to seven charges of dishonestly using a document and a charge of obtaining by deception a pecuniary advantage.
The court was told that on six occasions McIver declared to Work and Income New Zealand that she was single and not living with anyone, despite forming a relationship with James Cullen in August 2002.
When interviewed by ministry staff in February last year, McIver said she did not tell anyone about her relationship with Mr Cullen because they didn't share money or bills.
She was convicted and remanded on bail for sentencing in the Hamilton District Court in June.
Judge Denise Clark also ordered a report to look at the option of home detention.
Earlier this year, the Waikato Times reported that McIver and her partner James Cullen owed more than $30,000 in unpaid rent to a string of landlords, as well as debts to businesses ranging from $50 to $8000. There are claims lodged against them with the Tenancy Tribunal dating back to 2002, over a Huntly rental.
Yesterday's convictions related to two episodes of benefit fraud, dating between August 2002 and February 2008, in which McIver was overpaid $66,032.29.
Attempts by the Waikato Times to contact McIver were unsuccessful as her cellphone number appeared to be cut off.

they should be given the maximum penalty..it is people like this that makes it difficult for honest people, which basically leads to more red tape.

It is so irritating that people do this, I work hard to keep myself in school. It is not right that people like this abuse the system.

Each charge can be punished by up to 7 years.

I wonder if she will serve the sentencing concurrently?
