I have some land in the middle of nowhere, which is worth virtually nothing, though is a nice spot to visit and relax on. The local Council (Ruapehu), has recently raised the annual rates bill by approximately 400%, because they have alleged I have access to the local water supply, which I don't. The closest water connection is in front of the property, buried under a sealed road, approximately 5 metres from the boundary. According to the Council's water maintenance man, it would cost around $2,500 to get the water connected.
I have been to see a lawyer with knowledge of the RMA and he has said there are provisions in the act to a) Opt out of Council supplied water and b) Clarify whether a property actually has access to Council supplied water. Has anyone been through a similar process and can make any recommendations? Regards, Ben.
