would a helmet have saved them?

would a helmet have saved the young yank that fell backwards off the wall of the queenstown backpackers?

never mind, let's make everyone leaving a pub wear a helmet until they get home

surely it would save a lot of stupid drunks
    have you defeated them?

eri - that's a stupid comparison. Cyclists aren't acting recklessly (in general) and don't go out to get brain damaged but the risk of brain damage when cycling at speed is significantly higher.

A motorbike helmet may well have saved that riders life.
I doubt a cycle helmet would have.
I can see the merit in a cyclist wearing a motorbike helmet.

just saying motorcycle helmets are heavy and would also muffle any sound made by approaching cars, would probably do more damage than they would save

                ^

                as above

the weight, heat-trapping, noise blocking, cost etc

would kill more cyclists than save

Potential brain damage is not the only reason to wear a cycle helmet. It's not even something I considered while cycling. I was more worried about coming off and getting a knock to the head, not the extreme end of the scale kind of injury.

I don't mind people not wearing helmets.
Don't kid yourself that a cycle helmet provides a good level of protection in an accident.
A baseball cap will provide a similar amount of protection.
If you want head protection then wear something that will protect your head.
If you want comfort then wear whatever you want.
Just don't fine people if they don't wear what you think they should wear.

You have to stop saying obviously dumb things if you want to be taken seriously. You wear a baseball hat and headbutt a block wall and then try it again with a cycle helmet and see which you prefer.

Plus; unless video evidence is posted then it never happened.

You really get uncomfortable whenever I point out the failings of bike helmets.
A bike helmet is a flimsy 1cm of polystyrene.
I seem to be challenging your long held beliefs.

                          • That is of course patently incorrect Bob. In addition not all helmets are created equal it would seem.

That video supports the point I've been making all along.
A cycle helmet is too flimsy to offer any protection at all.
A basball cap would survive that test better than either helmet did - you would still be able to wear the cap afterwards.
Perhaps a motobike helmet would be better?
                              Or a hard hat.
                              Thanks for making me smile.

Prove your point. Do the test.
