  • Compare: Planned 278-km canal by 2020 in Nicaragua Vs drama of Transmission Gully

Why can't we be like the Chinese.

Nicaragua on Monday broke ground on its Chinese-led $50 billion shipping canal, a massive infrastructure project that aims to rival Panama's waterway and revitalize the economy of the second-poorest country in the Americas.

Because the Chinese don't care about the environment, animal welfare or human rights? Because the Chinese government is a corrupt totalitarian regime?

    Because they censor the internet?

Because they still run concentration camps where they send anyone who dares speak about the government?

Because the conviction rate once you're in the court system is 99.9%

Do I need to go on?
    Squadly dinky do!

I'm with Davo on this. We can admire China for its extraordinary rise from a peasantry economy but the human price is heavy. Starvation under Mao Tse Tung, summary trials, forced abortions etc etc. It is easy in a soft first world country to admire others when we have never had to live their incredibly restricted lives.

Not a lot of fun being an ordinary Chinese person. No fun at all.

Incidentally the best guess in the international markets is the canal will never be completed. They don't have a captive population of coolies and its a blue-sky bet by some Chinese entrepreneurs.
