I have a hunch tainting is not quite as simple as ScottSI described. if you get it wrong and find there is more tax to pay it can be astronomically expensive. Last year I got pinged by the IRD for cumulative interest and penalties for a trust, I was late filing returns (very late), the dividends received weren't fully imputed (tax paid) and there was extra tax that hadn't been paid. Horrible.
