New Zealand's wealth has grown more than that of any other country in the world since 2000, according to a new report released by Credit Suisse.

It ranks NZ top, just ahead of Australia, in wealth growth per adult in the past 14 years, with both countries ahead of China.

The report says New Zealand has benefited from "favourable currency movements'' and when measured at current exchange rates, the average wealth of New Zealanders has grown by more than 300 per cent since 2000.

              • Yes but eri, the distribution of that won't be very wide. Most of it will have gone to a few, and basically none of it gone to the many.

as it looks like there has been a multiplier effect

anyone in nz with property has done well since 2000

property owners in auckland, quarter of the population, have done very well

those who had next to nothing in 2000

or have used the last 14 years to explore the limits of credit cards

                  haven't done well

                  should they have?

If the property was in Auckland then you would have done well. Not so in the regions, seems that anything past the Bombays is once again insignificant!

                          • I believe that the majority of Labour voters, a lot of tradies in that mix are probably better off under National now that they have moved towards the centre.
Especially the self employed, they are running a business and they have moved away from the underdog/hangdog mentality of Labour.
labour have just shot themselves in the foot with that maori woman running for leader. My god she is the most unprofessional looking person I have seen in parliament since the Greens got going.
Imagine if she is photographed on the world stage as a representation of kiwi women?? I might have to move country.

                            • Political roundup: Left and right unite against SkyCity 'crony capitalism'
How corrupt is the Government's SkyCity convention centre deal?
According to rightwing political commentator Matthew Hooton, the development of the deal was 'as close to corruption as we ever see in New Zealand'.
This is Hooton's verdict in his must-read NBR column, which has been made available online today: Close to corruption.
So now that the SkyCity deal has essentially fallen apart, why doesn't the Government pull the plug and start again?

Hooton suggests something somewhat sinister: 'The problem is that SkyCity has a guaranteed casino monopoly in Auckland and changing that would create enormous litigation risk.

Beyond that, SkyCity knows too much.
They have been talking privately with Mr Key and Mr Eagleson for many years.
Abandoning the project would therefore create unmanageable political risk.
Plus there are long-standing personal friendships to consider'.
